Did Your Burglar Find Out You Were Out Of Town On Your Facebook Page?

burglarJust take a moment and think, before you post that you're headed for Florida for a fabulous 10 day vacation, instead, post the pictures after you're home!

I know that you've checked the box that you'll only have friends see your posts, but on occasion, information can be leaked by a friend who didn't mean to spread the word.

Since some friends of mine had their home burglarized, I've started to notice how many of my friends have posted that they're either leaving town or they're out of town.  This information would never have been spread around in such a big way before social networking, and I wonder if we shouldn't be more careful!

I've even posted that I'm heading out of town, and now I wonder if that's such a good idea?  Of course, at my house, someone is always home, feels like grand central around here.

Let's just take a moment to think about those face book posts, maybe it's too much paranoia, maybe not!

Wanda:  My wife and I were just talking of this issue the other day after I saw a friend's post on Facebook.  By their picture it was obvious that they were an older couple that probably did not have kids living at home anymore also ... so it seemed unwise to be speaking of their Florida trip.  I think we assume that we are only speaking to "friends" that would never harm us on these sites and forget the dangers that may exist.  Your article speaks to that issue well and reminds us that that is not the case.  Thank you!

I posted a link to this for my facebook friends on facebook. This is a very good point that I had not considered. You may have just stopped some crime with this excellent post!

Wanda, good advice.  The Internet is certainly a very public place, and FaceBook is no exception.

Gene,  I just looked today at some of the history in my news feeds, and over the Holidays there was a lot of traveling (we all want to see family and friends)

Thanks for your link Amy, I hope we never know who might have thought twice and didn't get robbed because of the extra caution.

Craig, Thanks for your comment.  I do like to see pictures of fun vacations, may be best to show once people are home!

Wanda...

Before my last trip up north, I made certain that no information was leaked ahead of time on social networks. You can't be too careful these days.

Thanks for the feature Richard!  That looks like a pretty sturdy vault you have in your comment!  Loose lips shink ships!

I've never understood how people could so freely post that they are off and about for the next ten days...it's so obvious to me that this is an invitation to the wrong people to visit your home while you are away.

We see posts all the time that see to offer a bit too much info -- and could put the person at risk -- good post.

I can't tell you the number of times my Facebook page has been hacked into. Facebook is a great tool but it needs to be more secure.

Thanks for the comments everyone.  Just reminds me too about what I leave on voicemail when I'm out of town.  Maybe there is a better message that doesn't give out so much information!

Wanda, a good warning - - I have also seen posts from young teens stating they are "home alone and bored" or something along those lines - - another no, no I would think!

Wanda - I like your suggestion of posting and sharing photos once you are home and not while you are gone.  We are all living in changing times.

Super tip! There are other ways you can get yourself into trouble by "innocently" posting stuff on Facebook. Like having a great vacation while on disability insurance!

I think people also like to point out that they are away and are showing off their mobile capabilities to post from out of the country from their mobile device. It's like they are boasting in multiple ways.

Come to think of it i would share THAT kind of information with people i've known for some time. There's the old standby called Picasa. I've downloaded the pics to that application and send the link to share to whomever i feel comfortable with.

Wanda ~ Great advice. I would only share my pictures and stories after I got back from vacation! Not everyone needs to know what you are up to anyway, right!

I have noticed that a lot of people post a lot of personal info on Facebook that would be better served kept private.

local fans follow home team troguhh good and bad.One time I lived in Virginia Beach and it was late in the season (like week 16) and they were airing a Skins team with something like a 4-10 record against another team that was also around that record. There were 3 other gamesd that week with playoff impact they could switch to. I contacted the station and they said they understand the frustration but the ratings even for a crappy redskins was still better locally than airing one of these other good games. Each rating point in viewers means more money for the local station in ad revenue and in network ad revenue. The way TV assignment work .the netwoorks assign the station a recommended game taking into account who is required to show what games and then assigning them games based on:1. home team.2. fellow divisin teams games3. national interest gamesthey assign the local networks a game but the local networks are free to switch which game they air because they know more on local interest level who is the more popular team or with the local interst of games like former college or hometown players playing as rookies. For example Lincoln has aired a few Detroit games because of Suh. Oklahoma City has aired quite a few Bradford games for the Rams. Some stations opt to do some sort of online survey of fans to decide what game will air. shreveport, LA did this when it was choosing to air a Cowboys game or a Saints game earlier this season. In Tampa fan protests drove the stations to change games. Initially they were scheduled to carry a st louis @tampa bay game and then air a late CBS game. When Tampa didnt sellout they were going to flip to another FOX game. Many Dolphins and Steelers fans protested and wanted them to air the Steelers @ Dolphins game that week. So the stations switch games. I think the doubleheader network has the choice on which game to air when they cant air both and the hometeam does not sell out. Since CBS had the DH that weekend they chose to carry the early game forcing FOX on the late token game. The issue with FOX approval has to do with trying to maximize station and network ratings for advertisers. The approval piece is necessary because you could have some station owners rebl to the local audience and air only there pet team. Like say a sation owner in Tucson was orginally born an raised in Chicago so he always carries bears games on his station whenever he can irrelevant of record .and irrelevent of network ratings. If this owner was in Iowa or Minnesota he could get away with this because the HQ would think there is legitamite regional interest in the game because this is NFC North territory where people follow NFC North teams so airing Chicago doesnt raise red flags at HQ.
