I'm A Croc, and I'm Sorry for Eating The Wildebeests

I quickly read the first two chapters of the book Surviving Your Serengeti by Stefan Swanepoel, then I took the quiz.  I learned about this Active Rain Challenge from one of the daily AR emails.

I so wanted to be a Wildebeest, but it turns out I'm a Crocodile!

surviving your serengeti picOne of the most powerful images this brought to my mind has to do with an African National Geographic Documentary I watched not too long ago.  It was about the migration of the Wildebeests and the most terrifying scene was when the Wildebeests are about to cross a big river, loaded with Crocodiles.

The Wildebeasts tested the water, and while some entered the water and were quickly attacked by Crocodiles, the other Wildebeasts figured out where the Crocs were hiding, moved over, and stampeded across the river as fast as they could, in huge numbers.

Now I thought it was just a bummer that some of those Wildebeests sacrificed themselves for the benefit of the herd, so what I'm saying here is I was feeling pain for the Wildebeests.  Turns out they are quite resilient, and seem to survive well.

I wasn't even thinking about the Crocodiles, I just thought they were mean.  Now that I think about it, the Crocodiles seem to have figured out how to survive as well.  It's just kinda creepy to me that they lay in wait, under the water, with just their eyes popping out, waiting to jump the Wildebeests.

I'm not sure if I'm too happy about this.  The show wasn't about the Crocodiles survival, just the Wildebeasts.  Besides, their table manners are atrocious

I think I'll just have to read the rest of the book, when it comes out on March 1, 2011 and find out if being a Crocodile is socially acceptable!  I think I'd rather be the Wildebeest!
